Who
am I?
Well,
about me:
I
am not such an important or interesting person to know. But still you
can click here to go through the top 10
FAQ
from the visitors of this
website who wanted to know more about me.
OK,
let me give you a summary of myself: I have always been a late dog -
always achieve something (although rarely) when the rest shows me the
way. Always trying to work out some extra time in everything, but end up
stretching the legs.

My Family
My dad Mr. Basanta Kr. Saikia, My mom Mrs. Nikunja
Saikia and my sis Sonali. What
else to write about my family. Ordinary middle class family with strong
dreams, lesser achievements. For example: my sister wanted to be a
social reformer like Sarojini Naidu or Arundhati Roy but ended up with a
post graduate degree and searching for a corporate job with fat salary.
I stargazed to be a singer 'n' stage performer, but my singing never
came out of my bathroom. |

About my province Assam
Situated at the
easternmost part of India, Assam was once a British colony till
independence in 1947. Earlier it was ruled by the 'Ahom' dynasty for
about 700 years before it was handed over to the British by the 'Yandaboo'
agreement. The history of Assam goes back to the Aryan
civilization when the great 'Mahabharata' took place.
Today Assam is a place of
industries and agriculture. Industries are chiefly pertaining to oil
industries, tea industries and medium scale industries like the world
famous 'Muga' silk industry of Suwalkuchi, brass & gun metal utensil
industries of Hajo & Sarthebari. As far as the tea industry is
concerned, Assam is the largest producer of tea in India and has the
largest tea auction centre in Asia. Assam shares 55% of tea production
in India and 15.6% of the world. For the oil sector, there are three refineries, one petrochemical complex; another gas cracker project is
also on the card. In fact, Digboi is the place in Assam where oil well
was dug for the first time in Asia way back in 1868. There is also one
fertiliser factory in Namrup, cement factory in Bokajan and paper
production unit in Jagiroad.
Places of tourist
interest: Guwahati (gateway to Assam with many historical places),
Sivasagar (capital of Ahom kingdom), Tezpur (historical place), Majuli
(spiritual place with 'Shatra' culture), Barpeta (historical &
spiritual place), Kaziranga Sanctuary (only place of one horned
rhinoceros in the world), Manas Sancuary (its a jungle out there) and
nearby places like Shillong (sobriquet: Scotland of the east), Tawang/Bomdila
(film makers' paradise). Tourists can also watch out for festivals like
Dehing-Patkai Utsav, Guwahati Beach festival and Kaziranga Hasti Mela
during the months of January-February every year. Another thing worth
watching is the unique mobile theatre groups, staging famous world
events and famous movies like Titanic, Jurassic Park, with stunning
visuals & special effects live on stage. This has been an added
tourist attraction in the past few years.

About
my hometown Guwahati Guwahati
has been the capital of this region from the Vedic age. Earlier known as
Pragjyotishpur, this city of hillocks and river Brahmaputra flowing
through it, was established by king Narakashura of the 'Puranas'. Today
Guwahati is a city of pin-jerk roads, flyovers, lounge bars, pizzerias,
shopping plazas, multiplexes, river cruise, hangouts and people here are playing with
electronic gizmos like cell phones and PDAs. In fact, according to a
recent survey, this city secured the fifth position in India where
people are spending on luxury stuffs, although the per capita income is
less compared with its counterparts in India. Guwahati
has a railway station which connects all the major cities and states of
India and one International airport connecting all the metro cities and
flights to Singapore & Bangkok. Main
educational institutes here are: Assam Engineering College, Guwahati
Medical College, Gauhati University, Cotton College, Guwahati Veterinary
College and Indian Institute of Technology. Guwahati
is a tourist attraction for historical monuments like Kamakhya temple,
Umananda temple, Vashista Ashram, Navagrah temple and also for nearby
places like Hajo, Barpeta & Shillong. One can also check out the
state museum, Shankardev Kalakhetra & state zoo cum botanical
garden. |
